Privacy Policy
Chess & Crossbones on the web (chessandcrossbones.com). Last updated November 2, 2026.
The short version: you play without an account. Your progress stays in your browser. If you sign the high-score board, we keep the name and place you type. Ads are served by Google, and in some regions Google asks for your consent first.
Who we are
Chess & Crossbones is made by LaunchOC. Questions about this policy: support@launchoc.com.
What stays on your device
Your game progress, score, settings (sound and music), and the name and place you last typed are saved in your browser's local storage. They never leave your device unless you post a high score. Clearing your browser data removes them.
High scores
When a round ends with a top-10 score and you choose to sign the board, we send our server the name you type, the city and country you type (both optional), your score, the pirate you reached and the round. These are shown publicly on the high-score board. We don't ask for your location, and we don't link scores to an account, email or device ID. Our server, like any web server, briefly processes your IP address to answer the request and to block abuse.
Names are checked by an automatic filter, and we may remove any entry. To have an entry removed, email us with the name, score and date.
Ads
The free game shows an ad between some pirates. Ads are served by Google AdSense. Google and its partners may use cookies or similar technology to show ads based on your visits to this and other sites. You can learn more at How Google uses information from sites that use its services and turn off personalized ads in Google Ad Settings.
If you are in the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland, a Google consent message asks for your choice before personalized ads or cookies are used. You can change your choice at any time from the "Privacy and cookie settings" link the consent message adds to the page.
Usage statistics
We measure how the site is used (for example, how many people start and finish a round) with Google Analytics for Firebase. This uses anonymous identifiers, never your name, and in the regions above it respects the choice you made in the consent message.
Fonts and puzzles
The page loads a font from Google Fonts, which receives your IP address to deliver it. The chess puzzles come from the Lichess puzzle database (CC0); nothing is sent to Lichess while you play.
Children
The game is for a general audience and does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Please don't type a real full name on the high-score board.
Your choices and rights
You can play without signing the board, clear your browser data at any time, and change your ad consent. Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR or the CCPA), you may have the right to access or delete information about you. Email us and we will help.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update this page and the date at the top.
